AYANA Farm:
A Living Classroom
At AYANA Farm, we’re not just focused on sustainability for our crops—we’re also dedicated to educating the next generation of environmental stewards. Through AYANA’s partnerships with Guidepost Montessori and Green Camp Bali, we create opportunities for young minds to engage with nature in a hands-on way. These educational programs bring children from different age groups to our farm, where they gain practical knowledge about sustainable farming practices, environmental awareness, and traditional agricultural methods.
Guidepost Montessori AYANA Bali offers a child-centered educational experience based on the Montessori method, encouraging self-directed learning and exploration in a prepared environment. Each week the children visit the farm and actively participate in planting, caring for, and harvesting their own crops. They learn not only how food grows, but also how important it is to take care of the land. Green Camp AYANA delivers an environmental-educational program focused on sustainable practices, creativity, and connecting children with nature through hands-on learning experiences. Each week the children explore the farm’s diverse ecosystems, learning skills like shelter-building, foraging, and sustainable food practices, all while deepening their connection to the environment.
At AYANA Farm, we believe that nature is one of the most powerful teachers. Our lush landscapes and sustainable farming practices provide the perfect backdrop for these two unique educational programs. Students engage in active, experiential learning that transforms AYANA Farm into a living classroom. Here, children not only cultivate plants but also a lifelong respect for the environment. Whether nurturing seedlings or learning survival skills, they gain insights that extend well beyond the farm, fostering a new generation of environmentally aware leaders.
A Natural Classroom: Guidepost Montessori at AYANA
Nestled within the lush grounds of AYANA Farm is the Guidepost Montessori AYANA Bali School campus, catering to children aged 18 months to 6 years. It offers a unique educational experience where learning takes root in the most literal sense. The close proximity of the farm to the school creates a dynamic environment for children to engage with nature hands-on. Maria, the Head of School at Guidepost Montessori AYANA Bali, conveys her enthusiasm for the benefits of having the farm right next door: “Having the farm right at our doorstep enriches our students’ education and connects them to nature. The hands-on experience they gain from preparing plant beds, planting seeds, nurturing the plants, and harvesting is invaluable. These experiences instill a sense of responsibility and a love for nature that we hope will last a lifetime.”At Guidepost Montessori AYANA Bali, the children visit the farm weekly. Here’s how our weekly farming sessions unfold:
Soil Preparation: Students begin by learning the fundamentals of soil health, including hands-on experience in preparing plant beds and understanding the importance of composting and soil enrichment for healthy, productive gardens.
Planting Seeds and Seedlings: Depending on the plant, students will either sow directly in the fields or start their seedlings in the plant nursery. In the nursery, they will use bamboo trays grown right on the property to carefully plant seeds. As the seedlings develop, they transition to creating root balls, where they gently remove the young plants and encase the roots in a ball of compost, an essential skill for successful transplantation. Finally, the children transplant their root balls into the Guidepost vegetable bed on the farm.
Plant Care: The students are tasked with taking care of their plants until they are ready to harvest. This immersive experience not only deepens their understanding of agriculture but also instills a lasting appreciation for nature and the responsibilities needed in caring for living plants.
Harvest and Celebration: The journey culminates in the joyous experience of harvesting their vegetables, which they prepare and eat.
Guidepost Montessori AYANA Bali is dedicated to cultivating a love for learning and appreciation for nature among the children. Through its innovative programs tailored to various learning styles, the school not only nurtures confident and curious individuals but also equips them with the skills necessary for their futures. As they grow, so does their understanding and connection to the world around them.
Growing with Nature: Green Camp AYANA
Children aged 7-12 are invited to embark on an extraordinary adventure through an innovative partnership with Green Camp Bali, a world leader in purpose-driven outdoor education. Set within AYANA Farm’s natural landscape, the program transforms everyday surroundings into a living classroom where young explorers develop essential survival skills, deepen their environmental awareness, and forge meaningful connections with nature.
“AYANA Farm is one of the most ideal places for campers to immerse themselves in nature, as it contains rich biodiversity and serves as a living laboratory for learning and fun. The farm provides Green Camp with facilities that directly support our programs, including an edible flower garden, composting station, plant nursery, and more,” says Ryan Ade Putra, Senior Lead Facilitator at Green Camp Bali.
Green Camp AYANA combines outdoor adventures with hands-on learning experiences. Each day is different and brings new discoveries and challenges:
Farm Discovery Tuesdays immerse children in the vibrant biodiversity of AYANA Farm. Young naturalists embark on flora and fauna scavenger hunts, creating their own nature guidebooks to document their discoveries. The day concludes with eco-printing activities, where children learn to harness plant pigments to create unique patterns on fabric.
Bamboo Designer and Builder Wednesdays offer an exciting blend of creative engineering and eco-friendly activities. Participants work together in the bamboo water transfer game, strengthening teamwork skills while having fun. The highlight includes designing and constructing egg slides using bamboo and banana trunks, where teams test their engineering prowess by rolling eggs down their creations to check stability. This session rounds off with a sustainable craft activity, where participants learn to make recycled paper by combining dried bamboo leaves with used newspapers, introducing them to eco-conscious crafting techniques.
Nature Explorer Thursdays reconnect children with nature’s gifts through engaging activities like coconut climbing and farm-to-table chocolate making. Students learn about the versatility of natural materials while discovering how to craft their own chocolate treats using homegrown ingredients.
From Seed to Table Fridays transform young adventurers into “green master chefs.” The day begins with food foraging at AYANA Farm and culminates in an Indonesian cooking class, teaching children about sustainable food practices and the journey from garden to plate.
Survival Saturdays invite children to become skilled wilderness explorers through exciting hands-on activities. Students learn fundamental survival techniques by constructing shelters and creating water filtration devices from recycled materials, while understanding the four basic human necessities: air, food, water, and shelter. The adventure peaks with a thrilling treasure hunt where young explorers use real compasses to navigate through Tevana Garden, uncovering special rewards at each hidden checkpoint.
A Foundation for Environmental Stewardship
Green Camp AYANA’s program aligns perfectly with AYANA’s commitment to sustainability and the Balinese Hindu principle of Tri Hita Karana – creating harmony between humans, nature, and gods. Through experiential learning and challenges designed by experienced facilitators, children develop practical skills and the environmental awareness needed to become future change-makers. “The partnership between AYANA and Green Camp Bali exemplifies a shared commitment to inspiring sustainable change,” says Annisa Indira Sulistyowat, Green Camp Lead Facilitator. “With Green Camp’s expertise in nature-based education and AYANA’s renowned facilities and dedication to sustainability, we are creating transformative experiences that empower children to become mindful stewards of the environment.”
The program runs from December 2024 – February 2025 and March 2025 – April 2025, from 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM. With a maximum capacity of 20 explorers per session, each child receives personalized attention while engaging in activities that foster both individual growth and team collaboration.
Whether it’s learning to create their own bamboo structures or understanding the principles of permaculture, children at Green Camp AYANA are empowered to explore, learn, and grow in one of Bali’s most picturesque settings.
